Apply to LIGO SURF

Information for Applicants

Eligibility

Applicants must be continuing undergraduate students (i.e. who will be students next year) in order to be eligible.

Eligibility requirements for U.S students:

To be eligible for LIGO SURF, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate (college and university student) pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Have completed a full year of undergraduate education at your college or university, including at least one full year course in undergraduate physics
  • Not be under any disciplinary sanction

Students at institutions in India

LIGO India provides opportunities for GW research in India. Students in India may apply for the LIGO SURF program through the LIGO India portal.

Students from India typically arrive and leave 2-3 weeks earlier than our advertised program dates to accommodate school schedules.

Timeline for Summer 2027

Program dates: June 15 - August 20, 2027

The application will become available starting in November of 2026, with a deadline to apply in January of 2027. See the application for details.

We will select students in March of 2027, and hope to complete student selection in April of 2027.
